Kalchakra is an annual initiation ceremony for Buddhists complete with rituals and prayers and is conducted on a large scale across the globe.

Kalachakra the Buddhist tantric practice belonging to the Highest Yoga Tantras the empowerment for which has traditionally been given in Tibet to large gatherings of people. HH the Dalai Lama will be giving the empowerment for the 30th time in his life at Amaravati in January 2006.

Amravati has been chosen due to its Buddhist influence and because Buddha is said to have taught the Kalchakra here for the first time.

The Kalchakra Root Tantra was taught here on the 15th of the third month, in the year following Buddha's enlightenment at Shri Dhanyakataka. Buddhism is said to have flourished in this year from 2nd century BC to 2nd century AD.

This is the 30th Kalchakra Empowerment by the Dalai Lama in his lifetime and is particularly significant as it coincides with the 2550th anniversary of the Parinirvana or the Passing Away of Lord Buddha.

The Ritual
The unique feature of Kalachakra 2006 is convergence of several religious rituals during this period contrary to the general practice of holding them separately at different places. The Moulam Chemo festival, the Geshe exam (equivalent of a doctorate in the religious teachings) and Lome Jegin (accepting the disciple) or Enhancing the disciple were conducted concurrently.

The Geshe is the ultimate one-to-one one-hour scholarly debate at the site to test the students' knowledge after having undergone such tests at their monasteries.

A special teaching was given to a selected 40 disciples of the Dalai Lama for three hours after earth ritual.

About 15,000 Buddhists attended the inaugural rituals that began at 7 a.m. and went on till 4.30 p.m. on 5th January 2006. On Friday the 6th January 2006 while the Earth Ritual Prayers have continued, an Earth Ritual Dance was performed by the members of Namgyal Monastry.

Meeting of Mandala has begun on January 7 2006.
